Change can be Evolutionary or Revolutionary
In the gold rush many evolutionary and revolutionary changes occurred. A lot of things were affected by the gold rush. Only a few things were left unchanged.
Many changes were revolutionary. As soon as John Sutter and Sam Brannan started to spread the word of James Marshall’s discovery, the news reached all corners of the world. People wanting to mine came from everywhere to the gold fields of California. As a result of the fast population change, California became a state. This wasn’t normal because most of the current states of America became territories before states. One thing that could happen often in the diggin’s was claim jumping. It happened with no notice. One day a miner had a claim and the next it was gone.
There are a few more revolutionary changes in the gold rush. Striking it rich was something that could cause a very immediate change in wealth. Also the sanitary conditions of miners changed very soon after they arrived. Miners only bathed about once a month. Gross!!!!!!!!! In the diggin’s miners needed to spend every minute of their time looking for gold to make their fortune. Water was also very expensive. Therefore miners quickly changed from being clean to being dirty.
Evolutionary changes also occurred in the gold rush. Finding bits of gold little by little and day by day caused some miners to slowly get rich. To make the gold fields safer when miners first arrived in California, they had to create laws and government. As more and more people came into the gold fields, miners made improvements to the laws. These laws were known as “miner’s law.” Not many things were the same before, during, and after the gold rush.

Change is inevitable
There were many inevitable changes caused by the gold rush. For example, once the word spread of James Marshall’s astounding discovery, the population of California skyrocketed. People from every corner of the world came to try to make their fortune. The prices of simple items increased by large amounts. This happened because there were many miners in California wanting simple items and there was not enough of it. For example, during the gold rush it cost $800 for one barrel of flour. Bread cost a dollar, and if an argonaut wanted it with butter it would cost double that! When forty-niners came to California, they were forced to create laws and government. Miners had to follow rules otherwise they could do whatever they wanted. This would lead to miners committing murder and robberies without being caught and charged of crime. This created danger in the gold camp.
